[pushes the telescope to the left, about ten inches]

[She wrenches it back to it's original position, overshooting at first by an inch or so]

[keeps his hand on it, and shoves it again, harder]

[She wrenches the alignment back again, taking a little longer this time to get it right]

[focuses on the metal tripod legs this time... the whole telescope starts to creep backwards, away from her, scraping loudly on the ground.]

[grabs for the telescope desperately]

It seems to me you can see the light just fine with your own eyes. Maybe even other things, if you bother to look.

No. I want you to do something with that focus.

[lifts the telescope, and drops it down (not too roughly, but a bit jarring) next to the trapdoor instead. the lens is now pointing down at the ground.]

You can start by realigning this thing, since you're going to do that anyway.

Focus without action is just inaction.

[checking the telescope out to make sure the lens isn't damaged]
