I've met a few of them when I was asking concerning magic. They were helpful, even if one was frightened of me and another one was clearly going to develop a hangover.
It's a risk to trust the other party's willingness to co-operate. However, if we both trust each other, the injuries are minor. If we betray them, we're lowering ourselves to potentially losing a limb or going out unharmed. I realize we have no obvious reason to believe in them, but if we both betray each other, that's basically the same terrible end as being betrayed while trusting them-!
So we should trust them even though we don't technically trust them.
