Before you are heaps of food and drinks and remnants of meals, all as carefully sorted as you’ll find in any uptown supermarket: Carefully balanced soda cans nearly brushing the ceiling of the cavern, all the labels facing the same way. Piles of meat sorted into rows in the corners, and a load of cat skins, sorted by spots and stripes. Plastic-wrapped microwave meals, rats, bottles of moonshine, blueberries and pumpkins, grist and overcooked fish.
There’s only one area which seems to be different, a haphazard mess surrounded (almost blocked out of sight) by the rest, an area that can only be dug through
There’s a thin and weaving path through the otherwise ordered mess.
Movement comes from the small and skeletal child with a shock of red hair dwarfed by the piles, his back to you (you’ve gone unnoticed). He’s patiently stacking a box, standing on it, and stacking another to climb perilously high, trying desperately to reach the top of a pile.]
